古代人对太阳运行轨道上的十二个星座的合称
在古代为了方便航海时辨认方位与观测天象，于是将散布在天上的一部分星星运用想像力把它们连结起来给他们命名，命名的方式有依照古文明的神话与形状的附会﹙包含了美索不达米亚、巴比伦、埃及、希腊的神话与史诗﹚。
另一部分是近代才命名，经常用航海的仪器来命名。
到了现代，全世界已经统一依据星座图将天空划分为88区域88个星座。
这88个星座就把宇宙划分为南北天球两大部分，根据每个星座的大部分面积是在北天或在南天，分别被称为北天星座或南天星座。
北天星座有28个，南天星座有48个，另外12个为黄道星座。
所谓黄道就是地球绕着太阳公转，一年转完一圈。
地球公转时，从地球上看太阳，太阳在天球上、众星间缓慢地移动着位置，方向与地球公转方向相同，即自西向东，也是一年移动一大圈，叫做太阳的周年视运动。
太阳周年视运动在天球上的路径，就是黄道。
简单一点来说即是太阳在天球上运行的轨道（希腊文ZODIAC：即动物绕成的圈圈）。
黄道经过88个星座中的13个，除了蛇夫座的一小部分之外，从春分点（春分点：黄道与天球赤道的交*点）所在的双鱼座数起，它们是双鱼座、白羊座、金牛座、双子座、巨蟹座、狮子座、处女座、天秤座、天蝎座、人马座、摩羯座、宝瓶座，统称为黄道十二星座。
黄道星座名称从古代到现在已经经过多次变迁，很多与神话有关，多数是以动物名称命名。
我们一般谈论的星座就是以地球上的人为中心，当你出生的那一天看到太阳运行到轨道上哪一个星座的位置，就说你是什么星座，我们俗称“太阳星座”。
